Wakefield Cathedral & Crigglestone Viaduct
While you're holidaying in West Yorkshire you have to visit Wakefield Cathedral. It has the tallest spire in all of Yorkshire and was recently reopened following a £3 million restoration programme to renew and restore the nave and allow for more space. It is now suitable for public gatherings, concerts and other community gatherings as well as worship. The restoration work also revealed a portion of a painted angel above the rood screen, believed to be from the original church walls built 700 years ago.
The nearby Crigglestone Viaduct at Calder Grove is a particularly famous section of the Midland Railway's route from Royston Junction to Thornhill. It has 21 arches and measures 1,270 feet. It overlooks Pepper's Yard Oak site and the Wakefield-Barnsley line, being a popular site for tourists. Surrounded by greenery, the purple-bricked arches can be followed all the way to the River Calder.
On Ilkla Moor Baht'at
The unofficial anthem of Yorkshire is On Ilkla Moor Baht'at, about a man courting the woman he loves across Ilkley Moor without wearing his hat. It is sung in the Yorkshire dialect and probably originated in Halifax. The song was actually used for some time as a popular hymn but has become more of a folksong overtime. In the United States it is still used as a hymn, though they often add the line: 'Up the ducks!' The Ilkley Moor itself is great for tourists.
Full of sites and views which have inspired some great legends and stories, from the stone cow and calf to the swastika stone or the site of the 1987 alien sighting. Ilkley Moor also includes two millstone grit rock climbing areas: Rocky Valley and Ilkley Quarry. Rambling around the moor is a common practice by tourists, church groups and scouts.
